Russia and the United Arab Emirates have agreed to expand cooperation under an intergovernmental agreement on the exploration and use of outer space for peaceful purposes. The document was signed Tuesday during the 72nd International astronautical congress in Dubai by Roscosmos head Dmitry Rogozin and UAE Minister of state for advanced technologies and chairman of the UAE Space agency Sara bint Yousef al-Amiri.

"If we talk about specific areas of our work, we have several interesting directions. For example, in the part of manned space, we are ready to train your representatives for a long professional flight. It is our honor to prepare your first cosmonauts," said Rogozin before signing the agreement.

The Roscosmos press service explained that the signed agreement will allow Russia and the UAE to develop mutually beneficial cooperation in the field of satellite navigation, remote sensing, monitoring of outer space, satellite telecommunications and communications, creation of space equipment, manned cosmonautics and scientific research in outer space.

Earlier, UAE ambassador to Russia Mohammed Ahmed Al-Jaber said in an interview with TASS that the United Arab Emirates were interested in developing cooperation with Russia in the exploration of outer space, the parties will soon sign an agreement on cooperation.

The UAE's first space mission was carried out in 2019 together with Roscosmos. Emirati cosmonaut Hazzaa al-Mansouri flew to the ISS aboard the Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft. He spent eight days on the station. The UAE has been recently engaged in the development of its space program. The UAE authorities earlier stated that in the nearest decade they plan to send more and more Emirati cosmonauts into space.

The 72nd International astronautical congress is being held at the Dubai World trade center from October 25-29 under the auspices of the International astronautical federation. The event will bring together heads of space agencies from different countries, representatives of the space industry, equipment manufacturers and scientists specializing in space-related issues. Experts will present their achievements and discuss plans for future space exploration missions.
