Abbas Calls for International Conference to Protect Palestinian People

29 November 2023

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has called for an international conference on peace in the Middle East to protect the rights of Palestinians. He made this address on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People.

"The Gaza Strip is under an existential threat, with its civilian population enduring deliberate and systematic attacks. We call for an end to tacit annexation, settlement practices, and racial discrimination throughout the Occupied Palestinian Territory," WAFA quoted Abbas as saying. "It is time to convene an international peace conference, enforce international will, and recognize our people's right to exist," Abbas urged.

The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed on November 29, a date designated by the UN General Assembly on December 2, 1977. The significance of November 29 lies in the historical event of 1947 when the UNGA adopted a pivotal document in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement—the resolution on the partition of Palestine. This resolution aimed at creating two independent states within the territory of Palestine, one Arab and one Jewish, and also designated a special international status for Jerusalem.
