Abbas Calls for Security and Peace Amid Ramadan

11 March

In the spirit of Ramadan, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has made an appeal for security and peace in Palestine. The WAFA news agency reports.

Abbas voiced his hope that the Palestinian people "would soon achieve their aspirations for freedom and independence, the establishment of an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and the return of refugees." He also called for an end to "aggression, violence, displacement, and hunger against the Palestinian people and their sacred Islamic and Christian sites."

"We implore the Almighty to bestow upon Palestine and the world the gift of security and peace. We seek Allah's mercy for the martyrs, healing for the wounded, and freedom for our brave prisoners," Abbas emphasized.

The situation in the Middle East sharply escalated after the infiltration of fighters of the  Hamas movement from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on October 7, 2023. Israel launched retaliatory strikes against the Palestinian enclave and parts of Lebanon and Syria.

On December 1, 2023, the Israeli army accused Hamas of breaching the ceasefire that had been in place since November 24 of the same year, leading to a resumption of hostilities in the Gaza Strip. The Palestinian authorities have attributed the renewed Israeli aggression to the United States. Since the beginning of this conflict escalation, the number of casualties in the Gaza Strip has surpassed 31,000.
