Israel's goal is to turn the Gaza Strip into an unlivable territory, stated Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the Arab League, during a meeting in Cairo on Sunday with Sigrid Kaag, the UN's temporary special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
"Israel seeks to render Gaza uninhabitable, thereby creating conditions for a scenario that is not only unacceptable but also a direct violation of international law," the Palestinian news agency WAFA quoted Aboul Gheit as saying.
According to Aboul Gheit, the forced displacement of Palestinians poses an existential threat to the Palestinian cause. He emphasized the need to intensify efforts to provide aid while simultaneously preparing for the reconstruction of Gaza.
The Arab League chief underscored that a two-state solution—entailing the peaceful coexistence of Palestinian and Israeli states—remains the only viable path to achieving lasting peace and security for both peoples. "Without genuine efforts to establish a Palestinian state based on the pre-1967 borders, the region will remain at constant risk of returning to new cycles of violence," he warned.
During their meeting, Aboul Gheit and Kaag discussed the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, stressing the need to solidify a ceasefire agreement. They called for urgent efforts to deliver aid to address the unprecedented scale of destruction in the Palestinian enclave, according to WAFA.
In January 2025, UN Secretary-General António Guterres appointed Sigrid Kaag, a diplomat from the Netherlands, as the UN's temporary special coordinator for the Middle East peace process and his personal representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority.
