Arab League to Hold Emergency Meeting on UNRWA Ban

31 October

The Arab League (AL) is set to hold an emergency session at the level of permanent representatives on Thursday to address the situation surrounding the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). The Cairo-based Arab League Secretariat announced the meeting, prompted by Jordan’s request, to formulate a unified Arab response following the Israeli Knesset's decision to ban UNRWA operations in occupied territories.

On October 30, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry formally requested the emergency meeting after Israel passed a law prohibiting UNRWA’s activities within its borders. The law, approved by the Knesset on October 28 with 92 votes in favor and 10 against, bars UNRWA from maintaining offices, offering services, or conducting any activities directly or indirectly in Israel. The Israeli initiative arose after reports claimed some UNRWA employees were involved in the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. Israel has previously accused UNRWA employees of collaborating with Hamas’s military wing.
