The Armenian parliament refused to cancel the martial law announced on September 27 because of the beginning of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh in an extraordinary session on Thursday. The session of the legislative body was broadcast on local TV channels.
"36 deputies voted for cancellation of martial law and 56 voted against it. The decision is not adopted", deputy speaker of the parliament Alen Simonyan summed up the voting results.
The opposition factions of Prosperous Armenia and Enlightened Armenia, which initiated the discussion in parliament, believe that the government is using martial law in the country to prevent rallies and demonstrations calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
The Armenian Defense Ministry argues that following the joint declaration of the heads of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan on a ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh, new borders have been formed between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which require the continuation of martial law to protect them.
On September 27, the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh escalated and active battles began on the disputed territory. On November 9, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a joint statement on the complete cessation of hostilities in Nagorno-Karabakh from 00:00 Moscow on November 10. Military units of Azerbaijan and Armenia stopped at their positions, and Russian peacekeepers are deployed in the region.
