Bogdanov: Arab Countries Resist Western Pressure in Relations with Russia

18 October

Arab nations maintain a balanced position on the global stage and in their relations with Russia, despite pressure from the West, Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian President’s Special Representative to the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister, said at the fourth forum of the Federation of Rectors of Russian and Arab Universities.

He emphasized that the current tensions between Russia and the collective West make partnerships with the Middle East and North Africa especially important for Russia. Bogdanov highlighted that despite unprecedented pressure from the US and the European Union, Arab countries have taken a measured and responsible stance in both bilateral relations with Russia and on international platforms, aligning with their national interests.

He pointed out that the Arab world has long been viewed by Russia as a natural ally with significant influence on global affairs, possessing vast cultural, economic, and political potential. Strengthening a trusting dialogue and mutually beneficial cooperation with each Arab country, as well as with intergovernmental organizations in the Middle East and North Africa, is a priority for Russia. According to Bogdanov, Arab countries understand that Russia is currently defending the principles of a fair global order based on national sovereignty and equality, standing up against neo-colonial ambitions from forces well-known to the Arab world. Russian diplomacy, in close coordination with its Arab partners, will continue to work toward making the Middle East a zone of security, stability, and prosperity. Moscow will also contribute to resolving crisis situations and participate in post-conflict reconstruction efforts in affected countries across the region.

In discussing cooperation in higher education, Bogdanov noted that Russia has set a record this year for the number of foreign students, with a total of 355,000. Thousands of students come from countries such as Egypt, Morocco, Yemen, Iraq, Syria, Algeria, and Jordan. He added that many of these students are welcomed with opportunities to study for free through government-funded scholarships.
