CIS leaders adopted Putin's idea to declare the year 2025 the 80th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Leaders of the CIS member states decided to declare the year 2025 the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the year of peace, this idea was expressed earlier by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said on Friday following a meeting of the Council of Commonwealth Heads of State.


"It was decided to declare 2024 the year of the volunteer movement, 2025 the year of the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War and the year of peace, and 2026 the year of nature protection," he told reporters. According to him, it was agreed that the status of cultural capital of the CIS in 2023 will be granted to St. Petersburg.


In the framework of the CIS a number of cultural and humanitarian issues were considered in detail. According to the CIS Executive Committee the Heads of the states supported the initiative of President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to establish an international organization to support and promote the Russian language under the aegis of the CIS and approved its concept. They also adopted a joint statement on cooperation in the climate sphere, in which they confirmed their intention to make a constructive contribution to the implementation of the global climate agenda.


In addition, the heads of state paid special attention to security. In particular, as the head of the foreign ministry specified, the program of cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism for 2023-2025 was approved. "Other decisions of the summit include the signing of two international treaties. These are the agreement on establishment of consultative council of the heads of election bodies of CIS member states and the agreement on cooperation in combating corruption," he added.


Besides, Tleuberdi specified that following the results of the summit an observer and a partner status was established in the CIS. Also the leaders of the CIS countries have signed the regulation of the CIS Commission on Human Rights. According to the information of the Executive Committee, the heads of CIS countries signed a document on the establishment of the Consultative Council of the Heads of Electoral Bodies. "The heads of state instructed the governments of the Commonwealth countries to complete the internal approval of the draft Agreement on Free Trade in Services, Establishment, Activity and Investment for its further signing by the CIS Council of Heads of Government. In order to ensure political, economic, social and other rights of citizens of the CIS member states, the Council of Heads of State decided to approve a new version of the Regulations on the Commission on Human Rights of the Commonwealth of Independent States," the Executive Committee explained.


About the summit


The meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of State was held on Friday in Astana. The next CIS summit will be held on October 13, 2023, in the capital of Kyrgyzstan, which will chair the Commonwealth in 2023, with Russia and Kazakhstan as co-chairs.
