CSTO Invites Observers from Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, and Mongolia to Participate in Exercises

28 August 2023

The CSTO countries have extended invitations to representatives from Saudi Arabia, Iran, China, and Mongolia to participate as observers in the "Combat Brotherhood - 2023" exercise scheduled to take place in Belarus. This announcement was made during a briefing by Colonel General Anatoly Sidorov, who serves as the Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff.

"As part of the exercise set to take place in the Republic of Belarus, invitations have been extended to representatives from non-CSTO member states: the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Islamic Republic of Iran, the People's Republic of China and Mongolia," he announced.

The matter was considered during consultations among representatives of relevant ministries and agencies of the CSTO member states during staff discussions, and it was subsequently finalized through the ministries of foreign affairs. "Currently, efforts are in progress to synchronize the invitation of observers for the 'Unbreakable Brotherhood' exercise set to take place within the territory of the Tajik Republic," Sidorov explained.

He also highlighted that the upcoming CSTO exercises will place a significant focus on the utilization of drones and the corresponding countermeasures against them.

"Numerous new scenarios will be practised, and I won't reveal the complete exercise plan at this time. However, I can share one aspect – a prominent focus will be on the extensive deployment of drones, along with strategies to counter their utilization by the opposing forces. This stands as a pivotal element," Sidorov responded to the inquiry. Furthermore, he added, "We will also simulate scenarios involving electronic warfare."

The CSTO joint operational-strategic exercise "Combat Brotherhood - 2023" is scheduled to take place on the territory of Belarus from September 1 to 6. The exercise will encompass a range of collaborative and specialized drills. Notably, the "Interaction-2023" exercise will simulate the utilization of collective security system forces and resources to address a crisis situation in the Eastern European region of the CSTO. The "Search-2023" exercise will engage intelligence units, while the "Echelon-2023" exercise will focus on practicing logistical support forces and assets. Additionally, a specialized exercise called "Barrier-2023" will involve the establishment of a joint formation dedicated to radiation, chemical, biological protection, and medical support.
