Egyptian Foreign Minister flies to Syria for first time in decade

27 February 2023

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry arrived Monday on an official visit to Syria, the first in a decade, Spokesman for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry Ahmed Abu Zeid announced on his Twitter page.

According to the statement, "Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad met Shoukry upon arrival...the sides are currently holding talks."

The Egyptian foreign minister is scheduled to visit Turkey on the same day. The Egyptian foreign ministry said earlier that Shoukry intends to express "Egypt's solidarity with the two countries and the brotherly peoples in connection with the February 6 earthquake, which caused great losses." "The foreign minister in his meetings in Syria and Turkey is expected to reiterate Egypt's willingness to provide aid and assistance to those affected in the disaster-stricken areas of the two countries," the foreign ministry said.

High-level relations between Cairo and Damascus have been suspended during the Syrian conflict. The first conversation between the heads of state since the election of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in 2014 took place on February 7 this year, immediately after the natural disaster.
