Egypt's FM to discuss normalization of relations with Turkey

12 April 2023

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry intends to discuss the process of normalizing relations with Turkey during his visit to Ankara on April 13, Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ahmed Abu Zeid said on Wednesday.

"The visit is aimed to continue discussing the normalization process between Egypt and Turkey in order to strengthen bilateral ties in various fields," the foreign ministry said in a statement. According to the ministry, the sides will also hold "consultations on a number of regional and international issues of mutual interest."

Shoukry is expected to hold a closed bilateral meeting with his Turkish counterpart, Mevlut Cavusoglu, followed by an extended meeting with delegations from the two countries and a joint press conference.

Relations between Ankara and Cairo deteriorated in 2013 after the overthrow of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi. Both countries recalled their ambassadors. In March 2021, Cavusoglu announced the resumption of contacts with Egypt at the diplomatic level. In November 2022, Turkish and Egyptian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Abdel Fattah el-Sisi briefly met at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in Qatar.

In late February, the Egyptian foreign minister visited the earthquake-stricken city of Adana in southern Turkey. He was met there and accompanied by his Turkish counterpart. In mid-March, Cavusoglu arrived in Cairo, where the sides declared their intention to fully normalize relations.
