Erdogan: Turkey Engages in Talks with Russia on Syrian Settlement

20 November

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated upon his return from Brazil that Turkey will continue to act in Syria based on its national security interests and is in contact with Russia to address the situation.

"We will persist in combating terrorism. Turkey is prepared for the new situation in Syria following the US withdrawal, as well as for current realities. Our national security takes precedence above all else. We are working to reshape the situation in Syria for the benefit of the entire region, conducting necessary negotiations with Russia on this matter," Erdogan said, as reported by Anadolu Agency.

Erdogan emphasized Turkey's zero tolerance for groups that pose a security threat beyond its borders. "We have conveyed our determination on this matter to all parties we engage with. Our objectives and stance have been made clear. Northern Syria has been occupied by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) with US support," he stated.

The Turkish president noted that northern Syria holds equal importance for both Ankara and Damascus. "Clearing this region of the PKK [and affiliated Kurdish groups] is crucial for the Syrian administration. The civil war in Syria has created deep instability, attracting terrorist organizations that we are combating. Just as we are taking these measures, the Syrian administration must also act," Erdogan added.
