Expert: Israel Has Fired as Many Shells into Gaza as US into Afghanistan in a Year

13 October 2023

In less than a week, the Israeli Air Force has deployed as many bombs and rockets to target Hamas facilities in the Gaza Strip as the US employed in Afghanistan over the course of a year. This information comes from a report by Ynet, citing Dutch military adviser and former UN war crimes investigator in Libya, Mark Geralsko.

"In less than a week, Israel has expended as much ammunition as the US used in Afghanistan in a year," he remarked, highlighting that Israeli Air Force strikes are occurring in areas with high population densities, which in turn "increases the likelihood of errors."

The Israel Defense Forces reported that they have targeted over 3,600 sites in the Gaza Strip since October 7, deploying 6,000 munitions amounting to 4,000 tons. To put this into perspective, during the war in Afghanistan (2001-2021), the US utilized a maximum of 7,400 tons of munitions in a single year. Furthermore, during the airstrikes in Libya in 2011, NATO aircraft employed more than 7,600 bombs and missiles.
