Expert: Israel Hesitant to Launch Large-Scale Operation in Lebanon

26 July

The possibility of a war in Lebanon is not predetermined, as Israel is hesitant to open a new front due to potential retaliatory strikes from Lebanese territory, Boris Dolgov, a leading researcher at the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies, told TASS.

"Opening another front against Hezbollah is quite problematic for Israel, which is why its threats to Lebanon's Hezbollah are still largely propagandistic. Although aggression and military action from Israel are possible, they would provoke a strong and harsh response from Hezbollah," Dolgov emphasized.

He added, "It's clear that if Israel initiates military action against Hezbollah, there will be retaliatory strikes both on Israeli army positions and on Israeli territory. Therefore, it is premature to suggest that the situation will escalate imminently with the Israeli army starting military action against Hezbollah."

Dolgov also highlighted that Hezbollah's military capabilities exceed those of Hamas. "Hezbollah has a significant arsenal of missile weapons, drones, and well-trained combat units, as well as reconnaissance sabotage groups capable of penetrating Israeli territory and launching strikes," he explained.

The analyst noted that initiating military action in Lebanon would destabilize the region. Nonetheless, Israel is preparing for such a scenario. "Israeli actions could indeed exacerbate the situation in the region. However, we should also consider that these Israeli threats to Hezbollah are substantiated by the Israeli army's preparations for a potential invasion of Lebanon, where Hezbollah forces are stationed," Dolgov pointed out.
