Federation Council: cooperation with Iran will continue, despite the new US sanctions

22 September 2020

The decree signed by US President Donald Trump on sanctions for the supply of weapons to Iran was another "pre-election surge in American sanctions activity" and will not affect cooperation between Moscow and Tehran, the head of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Konstantin Kosachev said.

"The Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission on trade and economic cooperation is due to meet in the autumn, and cooperation will continue, despite the next "pre-election" surge in US sanctions activity, which has already turned into a kind of not very pleasant, but familiar to everyone background "noise" of many international processes, to which everyone is beginning to adapt in one way or another," Kosachev wrote on his Facebook page.

He recalled that in the summer, "Washington made a powerful attempt to draw the UN Security Council into its sanctions games, declaring unilaterally re-entered into force "all international sanctions against Iran that were in effect before the conclusion of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). In addition, the Senator noted that on August 14, the UN Security Council rejected the US draft resolution on extending the arms embargo against Iran, when only two countries - the United States and the Dominican Republic - voted in favor. "Even the US's NATO allies-France, Great Britain (permanent members of the Security Council), as well as Germany (non - permanent member of the UN Security Council) - abstained. Having suffered a predictable fiasco on the diplomatic front, Washington returned to the more familiar language of ultimatums and sanctions. It is clear that the effect of this will be the same, which is none," Kosachev said, adding that this applies primarily to Russia's cooperation with Iran.

US President Donald Trump on Monday signed a decree on the US sanctions against those who will be involved in the supply of weapons to Iran. The document allows the US administration to impose sanctions on any state involved in the arms trade with Iran. According to the decree, the United States will be able to impose restrictions against both individuals and legal entities involved in the supply, sale, or transfer of conventional weapons to Tehran.
