Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu expressed serious concern over the situation around Nagorno-Karabakh and called for an immediate cessation of hostilities. This was the result of their telephone conversation on Thursday, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.

"The escalation of tension around Nagorno-Karabakh was discussed in detail. The ministers expressed serious concern over the ongoing armed confrontation and spoke in favor of an immediate cessation of hostilities," the document said.

The parties stressed "the inadmissibility of involving illegal armed groups from other regions in the conflict". "The need for maximally balanced steps in terms of political and diplomatic assistance to Baku and Yerevan was noted," the report says.

The foreign ministers confirmed their readiness "to coordinate closely the actions of Russia and Turkey to stabilize the situation in order to return the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to a peaceful negotiation course as soon as possible".

At the same time, Lavrov drew Cavushoglu's attention  to the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs on Karabakh, including the joint statement of the Presidents of Russia, the United States and France on October 1.

The diplomatic mission noted that the parties also touched upon the topical issues on the bilateral agenda and agreed to maintain further contacts.
