Grushko: Russia is convinced that its security initiatives will be supported

26 January 2022

Moscow is confident that the peace potential of its proposals on security guarantees will be supported and implemented, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko told reporters on Wednesday.

"Our proposals, which were formulated by Russian President [Vladimir Putin], open a direct, clear path to moving in the right direction not only in ensuring Russia's national interests, which is a fundamental task for us diplomats, but also returning to building European and global security on the principles of indivisibility of security, taking into account the legitimate security interests of others," the deputy minister stressed.

According to him, this "will ultimately free up resources for peaceful tasks, for the implementation of the agenda that is already on the horizon of international politics today, it is clear to everyone." "And we are convinced that this peace potential of our initiatives will be implemented and supported," Grushko stressed.

According to him, Russia has received some answers on security guarantees verbally. "We have already received some answers to our questions, verbally so far. However, we want to know why our proposals are unacceptable," he said.

"I would like to stress once again that if we start looking at them (proposals - TASS), each provision by provision, each clause by clause, it is impossible to object there because each of them actually leads to the strengthening of security, the removal of military tension and, as I said before, to the possibility to still switch to more rational ways of ensuring security than creating threats and counter-rule - what is happening today on the so-called eastern flank," Grushko added.

He also said that the politico-military situation in the world has reached a dangerous line. "Today the process of evolution of the military-political situation in Europe and in the world has reached a point where the most energetic efforts should be made to move the world away from this dangerous line," he said.

Grushko also said there is no question of restoring Russia's permanent representative office to NATO. "Now this positive agenda [with NATO] does not exist, there are no military contacts, so under these conditions, of course, there is simply no question of restoring our permanent representative office," he said.

The deputy head of the FM pointed out that the permanent representative office used to function on the basis of military contacts, but due to the termination of cooperation with Russia by the alliance, the conditions of its functioning became impossible. The deputy minister emphasized that without radical changes in this situation plans for the restoration of the Russian representation are not feasible.

"If there is no substance in our relations with NATO, and there is none as of today, because there is no positive agenda. And in principle, our post office was engaged in what provided and worked in areas of common interest with NATO," he explained.
