Gulf Countries Pledge $1.6 Billion for Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip

05 December 2023

The leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries, at the Doha summit, have pledged to allocate an additional $1.6 billion for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. This commitment was outlined in a statement published on the organization's secretariat website.

"The summit reiterated the GCC's commitment to stand with the Palestinian people, offering ongoing support to alleviate the suffering of Gaza Strip residents. The GCC aims to extend assistance for the reconstruction of areas devastated by Israeli military actions in recent years. The summit pledged an additional $1.646 billion, in addition to direct bilateral aid, under the Cooperation Council Program for the Reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, initiated in 2009," stated the concluding statement issued at the end of the summit.

The GCC leaders expressed their concern about the "blatant Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people" and condemned the escalating violence and indiscriminate bombing. They commended the mediation efforts of Qatar, Egypt, and the US, leading to agreements on a humanitarian pause between Israel and the Palestinian movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Gulf Arab leaders called for the immediate restoration of the truce in the enclave to achieve a "complete and sustainable ceasefire."

The GCC countries also expressed concern about the potential spread of the conflict to other regions in the Middle East. The summit emphasized that if Israeli aggression persists, it could lead to severe consequences for the peoples of the region and the international community as a whole.

On December 1, the Israeli army accused the Palestinian movement Hamas of violating the truce and announced a resumption of combat operations in the Gaza Strip. In response, the Palestinian authorities held the US accountable for the renewed Israeli aggression.
