Head of SVR: a number of Western countries are provoking the breakdown of agreements in Nagorno-Karabakh

18 November 2020

Sergey Naryshkin, the director of the Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), accused a number of Western countries of trying to reignite the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh to drive Russia out of Transcaucasia.

"According to information we have, some Western countries are provoking Armenian and Azerbaijani nationalists through available channels to discredit and disrupt ceasefire agreements. The Armenians are trying to convince that peace in Nagorno-Karabakh is the defeat of Yerevan. They throw in the idea that "war to the bitter end" is necessary. The Azerbaijanis, on the contrary, are told that the Kremlin "stole their victory" when the Azerbaijani army was one step away from taking Stepanakert," Naryshkin said in a statement issued by the SVR press office on Wednesday.

The US and its allies are disappointed that military operations in Karabakh have been halted with Moscow mediation, he also said.
