Iran to grant IAEA access to two disputed sites

26 August 2020

Iran has agreed to grant IAEA inspectors access to two disputed sites, the dates have been agreed, according to a joint statement from Tehran and the Agency.

On Monday, IAEA Director-General Raphael Grossi made his first visit to Tehran, where he met with the Vice-President and head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi, as well as Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

The statement notes that following intensive bilateral consultations, Iran and the IAEA reached an agreement on this issue "in good faith".

"In this regard, Iran voluntarily provides the IAEA with access to two facilities specified by the IAEA, and provides assistance to the IAEA in carrying out verification activities to resolve these issues. The dates for the IAEA's access and verification activities have been agreed, " a statement published on the IAEA's website said.

It is reported that the IAEA will continue Iran verification activities under the comprehensive safeguards agreement and additional protocol and standard practice on an equal basis and without discrimination to all countries, which have signed similar agreements and are capprotocol.

The IAEA Board of governors in June adopted a resolution calling on Iran to grant access to two sites that the Agency wants to visit because of alleged unregistered activities. Iran's permanent representative to international organizations in Vienna, Kazem Garib-Abadi, said at the time that Tehran rejected the IAEA resolution because it was based on allegations and was adopted under pressure from the US and Israel.

Iran spoke about the possibility of changing the level of cooperation with the organization because of the resolution, but President Hassan Rouhani later confirmed Tehran's intention to cooperate with the IAEA.

A joint statement from Tehran and the Agency notes that the IAEA has no further questions for Iran or further requests for access to other facilities.

"At this time, based on the analysis of the information available to the IAEA, the Agency has no further questions to Iran and no further requests for access to facilities other than those declared by Iran under the comprehensive safeguards agreement and additional protocol," the statement published on the IAEA website said.

The IAEA and Iran agreed to continue strengthening cooperation and mutual trust.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency and the Islamic Republic of Iran have agreed to further strengthen cooperation and deepen mutual trust to facilitate Iran's full implementation of the comprehensive safeguards agreement and the additional protocol temporarily implemented by Iran since January 16, 2016," a statement published on the IAEA website said.

It is noted that the IAEA would continue to take into account Iran's security concerns, "protecting all confidential information on safeguards in accordance with the IAEA Charter, the terms of the comprehensive agreement and additional protocol, the established IAEA confidentiality regime, standards and procedures."
