Iranian MFA threatened Ukraine with consequences of calls for destruction of weapons production

26 December 2022

Calls for the destruction of Iranian arms production will have political and legal consequences for Ukraine. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said this on Monday.

"We stress once again that we are not involved in the war in Ukraine and are ready to help resolve the crisis and establish peace. We consider the Ukrainian authorities' threatening rhetoric irresponsible, which will have political and legal consequences," the spokesman said, commenting on a statement by Ukrainian presidential office head adviser Mikhail Podolyak, who earlier called for the destruction of weapons production in Iran. Kanani's words were quoted by IRNA news agency.

On December 24, Podolyak said that "more destructive" measures are needed for Iran than sanctions. According to him, Iran plans to increase the supply of missiles and drones to Russia, which "frankly humiliates" the institution of international sanctions and demonstrates its ineffectiveness. "[We should] move on to more destructive tools: destroying factories, arresting suppliers," Podolyak wrote on Twitter.

In August, The Washington Post published an article alleging that Iran was supplying Russia with its drones. Subsequently, similar statements were made by representatives of the US administration.

Moscow and Tehran have repeatedly denied allegations of Iranian drones being delivered to Russia for use in Ukraine. Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov called such reports fake and stressed that the Russian army uses domestically produced drones. In early November, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian said that the Islamic republic had supplied drones to Russia, but in small quantities and a few months before the start of the military operation in Ukraine.
