Iranian President Calls for Removal of Borders Between Islamic Countries, Following EU Example

12 September

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart Abdul Latif Rashid, called for the elimination of borders between Islamic countries, similar to the model of the European Union. This was stated in a press release published on the official website of Iran's executive authority.

“The President pointed to the long-standing history of relations between the two countries and emphasized the need for the creation of a unified union of Islamic nations. Pezeshkian urged moving towards erasing borders between Islamic countries, drawing on the experience of the European Union,” the document reads. According to the Iranian president, strengthening the unity of Islamic countries would render Western-imposed sanctions ineffective.

In terms of bilateral cooperation between Iran and Iraq, Pezeshkian called for the establishment of specialized commissions aimed at expanding political, economic, and cultural ties.

Pezeshkian's trip to Iraq marks his first official foreign visit as the President of Iran. According to IRNA, during the three-day visit from September 11 to 13, the Iranian president is expected to visit Baghdad, Erbil, and Basra. It is anticipated that several bilateral agreements, initially negotiated under former Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, will be signed during the visit.
