The farewell ceremony for Ismail Haniyeh, chairman of the political bureau of the Palestinian movement Hamas, concluded in Doha. Haniyeh was buried in the Lusail cemetery, a suburb of Doha.
The funeral began at the Mohammed bin Abdel Wahhab Mosque in the morning, where thousands gathered to pay their respects to the martyred Hamas leader, according to Al Jazeera. Following a memorial prayer, the coffin, draped in a Palestinian flag, was transported to Lusail for burial.
The ceremony was attended by Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdel Rahman Al-Thani, Iranian First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and other dignitaries. Key members of the Hamas leadership, including Khaled Mashal, who is seen as a potential successor to Haniyeh, were also present.
Mourning events are taking place on August 2 in various countries including Indonesia, Lebanon, Malaysia, Pakistan, Turkey, and Houthi-controlled Yemen. On August 1, a separate farewell ceremony was held in Tehran, where Haniyeh was assassinated, with the procession led by Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Haniyeh's body was then transported to Doha. In recent years, he had resided in Doha, where Hamas maintains its political office.
