Kosachev: Russia might be able to initiate international law reform

Russia could take on the mission of initiating international law reform in order to ensure security around the world. This was stated on Tuesday by Vice-Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, speaking at the "Primakov Readings."

According to the senator, security should not be considered only in a military context. "No order based on Western rules will guarantee our country and the whole world complete security. In my view [Russia] can take on the mission of initiating a consistent reform of international law, its improvement. It is clear that this will be the hardest work, it is clear that it will not always lead to the desired results, but no one is preventing us from taking on the role of mediator of the expectations of the entire world on how to ensure security around the world on the principles of observance of international law," the senator said.

He noted that these principles should spell out criteria to distinguish non-interference from humanitarian interventions, terrorist actions from national liberation movements and so on.

Kosachev also drew attention to the importance of the humanitarian sphere. "I am convinced that if we fail to communicate our truth about what is happening now in Ukraine, it is because we do not always bring to the forefront what we are in Ukraine for: and that is, of course, protecting people. This is the main thing that our country implements. It seems to me that if and when we begin to make this the first or paramount or maybe even the only emphasis in explaining our actions to the outside world, we will significantly advance in rallying our like-minded people and supporters around Russia and Russian actions," the politician believes.
