Lavrov and Cavusoglu discussed by phone the resolution of the crises in Syria and Libya

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu discussed by phone on Thursday the prospects for activating the process of peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict and confirmed the readiness of Moscow and Ankara to support the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva.


"The parties discussed the prospects for activating the process of peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict, confirming in this context the readiness of Russia and Turkey to provide all possible support to the work of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva, the third meeting of which is scheduled for August 24 this year. The importance of building up a comprehensive counteraction to the terrorist threat and preventing new terrorist attacks was highlighted," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.


The Foreign Ministers of the two countries also noted that there was no alternative to a political solution to the crisis in Libya. "The diplomats exchanged views on the situation in Libya. The Ministers noted that there was no alternative to a political solution to the crisis in the interests of the people of this country on the basis of the existing international legal framework, primarily UN Security Council resolution 2510 and the decisions of the Berlin conference on January 19 this year," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

 

 

The Russian Foreign Ministry added that it was "agreed to continue consultations to assist the parties in order to establish the cessation of hostilities as soon as possible and start an inter-Libyan dialogue on ways to resolve the conflict politically."


As indicated on Smolenskaya square, the parties also discussed "the schedule of upcoming bilateral contacts at the high and highest levels on a wide range of issues of mutual interest."


The conversation was initiated by the Turkish side.
