Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo discussed by phone on Sunday the initiative of Russian President Vladimir Putin to hold a summit of the leaders of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and Iran on security in the Persian Gulf, the Russian Foreign Ministry reports.
"The heads of the foreign affairs agencies exchanged views on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to convene a meeting of heads of state of UN Security Council permanent members with the participation of heads of Germany and Iran to coordinate reliable mechanisms in the Persian Gulf region for ensuring security while taking into account all stakeholders’ concerns," the message reads.
The Foreign Ministry also noted that during the conversation, the Russian side reaffirmed its unwavering support for UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which provides the international legal framework for the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian Nuclear Programme (JCPOA).
"Lavrov stressed that its approval in 2015 was a major political and diplomatic achievement that helped strengthen nuclear non-proliferation and regional security in the Middle East region," the document says.
The schedule of bilateral contacts for the near future was also discussed. The conversation was initiated by the American side.
On August 14, Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed to hold an online summit of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, Germany and Iran in the near future, dedicated to the problems of implementing the JCPOA. According to the statement of the Russian leader published on the Kremlin's website, the purpose of this event is to "outline steps to avoid confrontation and aggravation of the situation in the UN Security Council."
