Lavrov and Saudi foreign minister discuss coordination on Yemen and Syria

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov and Saudi foreign minister prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah Al Saud discussed coordination of the two countries' actions on Yemen, Syria and the Persian Gulf area during a meeting on the sidelines of the 76th UN General Assembly, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement issued on Friday.


"Considerable attention was paid to strengthening coordination between Russia and Saudi Arabia on a wide range of international and regional issues, including the situation in Yemen, Syria and the Persian Gulf zone," the Russian diplomatic office said.


The foreign ministers also discussed in detail the build-up of mutually beneficial bilateral ties, the foreign ministry stressed. "[The sides] confirmed the mutual intention of Moscow and Riyadh to continue joint work designed to give the multifaceted interstate interaction the character of a strategic partnership. They stressed the importance of implementing the agreements reached earlier at the highest level on the development of bilateral cooperation in various fields," the statement said.


The high-level week of the UN General Assembly opened on Tuesday at the organization's headquarters in New York and will last until September 27. Lavrov arrived in New York on Wednesday; the Russian minister has already held more than a dozen meetings with foreign counterparts.
