Lavrov appointed Safronkov Special Representative for the Middle East

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has appointed Vladimir Safronkov, Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, as Ambassador–at-large-Special Representative of the Minister for the Middle East settlement, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Thursday.


"Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has appointed Vladimir Safronkov, Russia's Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN in New York, as Ambassador–at-large-Special Representative of the Minister for the Middle East settlement," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.


According to the Ministry, the diplomat will represent the Russian side in bilateral and multilateral contacts, "including in the format of the Middle East Quartet of international mediators aimed at achieving a sustainable and just Palestinian-Israeli and Arab-Israeli settlement."


The Middle East region is the most representative in terms of the number of high-ranking diplomats who oversee it in the Russian Foreign Ministry.


Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov has been a Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa since 2014. Also, the Middle East, including international formats for resolving the UN is supervised by the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Vershinin.


Vladimir Safronkov, as the Special Representative of the Russian Foreign Minister, will deal with all aspects of the Middle East Quartet.
