Lavrov assessed the chances of preserving the Iranian nuclear deal

Moscow and Tehran are making every effort to maintain the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program, and the chances of preserving the nuclear deal remain. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

Zarif arrived in Moscow on Tuesday. The last time the Iranian Minister visited Russia was in mid-June.

"We consider our meeting as an important stage in the common efforts that the remaining participants of the JCPOA are currently making to preserve this most important achievement of multilateral diplomacy. We consider the line taken by our American colleagues to completely destroy this most important document, as well as other agreements for arms control and non-proliferation, to be destructive in every sense. Nevertheless, we are confident that the chances of returning the JCPOA to a stable course remain, at least we, like our Iranian friends, are doing everything possible for this. We see that China is taking the same position, and the remaining JCPOA members from Europe are still interested in this, " Lavrov said, opening the meeting.

Lavrov also said that he intended to discuss at the meeting "what additional steps, first of all, legal ones, should be taken on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 2231, which was one with the JCPOA and as such should be implemented".
