The creation of a Palestinian state would pave the way for normalized relations between Israel and the entire Arab world, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov made this statement during the 14th Middle East Conference of the Valdai International Discussion Club.
The minister emphasized that a two-state solution remains endorsed by all key international players, including the administration of former US President Joe Biden, which upheld this approach. “The current administration under [President Donald] Trump, as far as I can see, has yet to clearly articulate its stance on this issue. However, we recall that beyond recognizing Israel’s sovereignty over the Golan Heights, the Trump administration introduced and promoted another initiative—what they termed the ‘Abraham Accords.’ These accords essentially sought to overturn the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative,” Lavrov explained.
The 2002 initiative, originally proposed by Saudi Arabia’s King, called for the establishment of a Palestinian state in line with UN resolutions as a prerequisite for the normalization of Arab-Israeli relations. Lavrov noted that the initiative was endorsed not only by the Arab League but also by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) during a summit in Tehran.
“Based on these decisions, the creation of a Palestinian state would lead to normalized relations between Israel and the Islamic world,” Lavrov stated.
