Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed Russia's support for the Persian Gulf countries' desire to create a more positive atmosphere in the region and welcomed the steps taken to normalize Arab-Iranian relations.
Speaking at a press conference following the sixth round of the Russia-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Strategic Dialogue, Lavrov highlighted the recent resumption of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran, which he believes contributes to a more positive regional atmosphere.
"We welcome the steps taken to normalize Arab-Iranian relations," - Lavrov stated. - "Saudi Arabia has just recently resumed diplomatic relations with Iran, which generally creates a more positive atmosphere in the region. We share our partners' attitude in seeking compromise solutions and readiness to take into account the interests of all parties involved."
During the dialogue, Lavrov also acknowledged the positive efforts to advance the political process in Yemen, led by the Arabian monarchies with the active participation of the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy Hans Grundberg. He expressed hope that these efforts would lead to a long-term truce and pave the way for an inclusive national dialogue under the auspices of the UN, aiming for a comprehensive settlement of the challenges faced by Yemen and its neighboring countries.
Regarding the international agenda, Lavrov emphasized the importance of respecting the key principles of interstate communication and international law, as enshrined in the UN Charter. He highlighted the need to maintain these principles to prevent the expansion of crises not only in the Middle East and North Africa but also in other regions of the world. Lavrov underscored the significance of resolving regional contradictions through the efforts of the countries in the region, with the involvement of constructive external partners, in order to achieve long-term and sustainable stability in the Persian Gulf zone.
