25 September 2023

Russia is fostering equal-footed relations with Egypt, countering efforts by a select few nations to legitimize their global dominance. Trade turnover between the two countries is experiencing rapid growth and has already surpassed $6 billion, stated Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during the inauguration of an exhibition commemorating the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Russia and Egypt.

"We recognize another attempt to legitimize the dominance of a select group of nations on the global stage. However, self-respecting states, valuing their history and traditions, assert their right to independently determine their development paths and forge friendships without external influence or prohibitions," - stated the minister. - "It's upon these principles, grounded in mutual respect for each other's national interests, that we are cultivating our strategic and partnership relations with Egypt. We are rapidly expanding our trade and economic ties, with trade turnover reaching $6 billion in 2022."

Lavrov pointed out that this represents nearly a 30% increase compared to the previous year. He went on to say, "In March, we convened a regular meeting of the trade and economic intergovernmental commission, during which we made new decisions to advance our joint projects."

Highlighting Egypt's significant undertaking in constructing the Aswan Dam, he continued, "Currently, our flagship collaboration revolves around the establishment of Egypt's first nuclear power plant, concurrent with the development of a Russian industrial zone in the Suez Canal area." He added, "Our humanitarian bonds are equally noteworthy, with thousands of Egyptians having received their education in our country and continuing their studies here."
