Lavrov: official recognition of the Taliban is not yet on the table

19 October 2021

Russia is not yet considering officially recognizing the Taliban (banned in Russia), Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters on Tuesday after a meeting with participants of the 18th annual meeting of the Valdai international discussion club.

"Official recognition [of the Taliban] is not on the table yet, and this has been stated publicly," he said.

The foreign minister noted that Russia, "as well as other influential countries in the region," is in contact with the Taliban. According to him, Moscow expects the Taliban to take measures to make the Afghan government not only ethnically but also politically inclusive according to its promises.
