Lavrov: realistic expectations for new agreements on Iran nuclear deal are low

13 July 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov expressed his skepticism about the prospects of reaching new agreements on the renewal of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) regarding Iran's nuclear program. Lavrov stated that it is not very realistic to expect the resumption of the JCPOA at present, as there are no guarantees that a new US administration would not repeat the decision to withdraw from the agreement.

Lavrov pointed out that "with upcoming elections in the United States, a new administration will take office, and it is uncertain whether it will be Democratic or Republican." He emphasized that there are no assurances that a new administration would refrain from withdrawing from the agreement, as had happened in the past.
