Lavrov: Resettling Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt Goes Against Their Interests

03 November 2023

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has expressed that the idea of resettling Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt contradicts the interests of both Palestinians and Egyptians, as well as the overall interests of peace in the region. He made this statement during a press conference following discussions with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Salem Abdullah Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.

Lavrov mentioned that Egypt has already publicly voiced its strong disagreement with the proposal to solve the Palestinian issue by resettling Palestinians in the Sinai Peninsula. He emphasized that such a plan would not contribute to peace in the region.

When asked about the plan, which also involved resettling Palestinians from Gaza to Canada, Lavrov noted that the Russian side was not aware of a plan involving Canada. However, he expressed his concerns about ideas that could hinder the creation of a Palestinian state and lead to an enduring conflict. He emphasized that, before embarking on such plans, it is essential to agree on the implementation of the UN Security Council's decision, as this is the only way to ensure peace and security in the complex and volatile region.

The plan mentioned in the media proposed moving Gaza Strip residents to tent camps in the northern Sinai Peninsula, building permanent cities there, and creating a humanitarian corridor. It also suggested establishing a special security zone within Israel to prevent Palestinian refugees from entering the country. The document did not specify what would happen in the Gaza Strip after the resettlement of its residents, and it was considered one of several hypothetical alternatives.

It's important to note that the document was described as a "concept paper," and there were no serious discussions on it within the Israeli government.
