Lavrov: Russia and its allies are working to resolve the situation in Afghanistan

01 September 2021

Russia is working to help resolve the situation in Afghanistan together with its allies in Central Asia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Wednesday in a speech to students and faculty at MGIMO.

"After the withdrawal of NATO troops from Afghanistan, the most important thing for us is to ensure the security of our allies, the Central Asian states <...>. The security of the southern borders of the Russian Federation depends directly on this. I hope that together we can agree on external steps that will help create conditions inside Afghanistan for the formation of real national leadership. We are actively working in that direction now," he said.

The Taliban (banned in the Russian Federation) began a large-scale operation to take control of Afghanistan after the announcement by the United States in the spring of its intention to withdraw from the country. On August 15, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani resigned and left the country, and the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight. US troops left Afghanistan entirely on Tuesday night, ending their 20-year presence in the country.
