20 January 2022

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will meet with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken in Geneva on January 21, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a briefing on Thursday.

"Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State Blinken will hold talks in Geneva on January 21. There will be a substantive discussion of two draft fundamental documents introduced by Russia on December 15, 2021: the treaty between the Russian Federation and the United States on security guarantees and the agreement on measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation and member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization," she said.

Zakharova also said that Lavrov and Blinken in Geneva will decide on further steps in connection with the proposals submitted by Moscow on security guarantees. "The meeting is supposed to assess the results of the talks held by the Russian and US interagency delegations in Geneva on January 10, the NATO discussion in Brussels on January 12 and the OSCE discussion that took place in Vienna on January 13," the diplomat said. - "Also, the parties are supposed to decide on possible next steps, with a view to the US side providing a written response with article-by-article comments on the Russian documents [on security assurances] as soon as possible".
