Mali's Interim President Establishes National Reconciliation Committee

30 January

The Republic of Mali's authorities have established a committee aimed at facilitating interethnic dialogue and the peaceful resolution of the country's current situation. This was announced by the country's interim president, Colonel Assimi Goita.

"The transitional authorities of Mali have formed a committee to prepare and orchestrate interethnic dialogue and the peaceful resolution process within the Republic," he stated, as reported by the maliactu portal. This move follows Bamako's official withdrawal from the 2015 Algiers Agreement.

Earlier, Mali's transitional government's Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Abdoulaye Diop expressed the government's determination to successfully implement the national reconciliation program in the country. He met with Russian Ambassador to Bamako Igor Gromyko emphasizing that Mali's leadership is committed to making maximum efforts to ensure peace, stability, and initiate the peace process in the republic.

The 2015 Algiers Agreement, signed following negotiations between Tuareg rebels and Mali's authorities, brought an end to fighting in the Tuareg-controlled north and east of the republic. The agreement stipulates increased autonomy for these regions and the integration of the rebels into Mali's Armed Forces. However, in December 2022, some Tuareg armed groups announced the suspension of their participation in the agreement's implementation, accusing the Malian authorities of failing to demonstrate the necessary political will to enforce it.
