Matviyenko: Russia and China do not compete with each other in Africa

11 July 2023

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko, who is currently visiting China, emphasized that Russia and China are not competitors but rather complementary partners in Africa. She stated on Tuesday that there is room for all countries interested in cooperation on the continent.

"No, China is not a competitor to Russia. On the contrary, Russia and China complement each other in African countries where our participation is welcomed," Matviyenko confidently stated.

She highlighted that Africa is a powerful and developing region with significant untapped potential. Matviyenko emphasized that considering Africa's interests and involving the continent is essential for building a multipolar world.

"With the vast potential of African states, there is enough space for all countries interested in mutually beneficial cooperation based on national interests. It is crucial to avoid approaching Africa with a neocolonial mindset," Matviyenko explained, underscoring the importance of respecting African sovereignty and pursuing cooperation on equal terms.
