Media: Bangladesh applies to join BRICS

19 June 2023

Bangladesh has officially requested to join BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), Dhaka Tribune reported on Monday.

According to the newspaper, the request was made following a meeting between Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in Geneva last week. Sources told the newspaper that during the discussion with Prime Minister Hasina, the South African president "positively considered" the proposal.

Bangladesh is currently categorized as a "Friends of BRICS". In early June, the BRICS foreign ministers and the representatives of the "Friends of BRICS" met in Cape Town. Dhaka then openly signaled its readiness to join BRICS.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told TASS earlier that the total number of states interested in joining the association approached 20.
