Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his doors are now closed for US Ambassador to Ankara Jeff Flake, following the diplomat's meeting with Kemal Kilicdaroglu, the presidential candidate for the main opposition Republican People's Party.
This came after the diplomat met with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the presidential candidate of the main opposition People's Republican Party, the Star newspaper reported Sunday.
"What is [US President Joe] Biden's ambassador doing? He goes and visits Mr. Kemal. Shame on you, use your head. You are an ambassador. Your interlocutor here is the president. How will you ask for a meeting with the president after this?" the Star newspaper quotes Erdogan as saying. "Our doors are closed for him <...>. Why? Let him know his limits," he concluded.
The presidential elections in Turkey will be held on May 14, on the same day as the parliamentary elections. The previous presidential elections were held on June 24, 2018. Erdogan won them with 52.6% of the vote.
