03 May 2023

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi has arrived in Syria, SANA reported on Wednesday.

According to its information, Raisi is being accompanied by a large delegation, including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and Defense Minister Mohammad Reza Ashtiyani, as well as Oil Minister Javad Owji.

This is the first visit of the president of the Islamic republic to Syria in 13 years.

Iranian Government Spokesman Ali Bahadori Jahromi said Tuesday that the talks will focus on trade and economic cooperation. On April 28, the Syrian newspaper El Watan, citing a government source, reported that Raisi and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will hold talks in Damascus on May 3-4 on strengthening bilateral strategic cooperation, particularly in the economy. According to the newspaper, a large package of documents will be signed during the visit of the Iranian politician.

The Iranian president's visit to Syria comes amid another escalation of the Arab-Israeli conflict. On Tuesday, Israeli Air Force planes launched missile strikes on Syrian army positions on the outskirts of the city of Aleppo, Suria TV channel reported. One Syrian soldier was killed and seven others were wounded in the attack. In addition, the attack damaged the runway at Aleppo International Airport. On the same day, after Khader Adnan, an activist of the Palestinian group Islamic Jihad, died in an Israeli prison after a hunger strike, more than 70 rockets were fired into Israel from the Gaza Strip, Israeli Radio Kan reported. In response, the Israeli army struck military targets of the radical Hamas movement in the Palestinian enclave in two waves of attacks.
