Media: Presidents of Iran and UAE to meet soon

05 April 2023

United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan will meet with Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in the near future. ISNA reported on Wednesday, citing a member of the national security committee in the Iranian Majlis (parliament).

According to him, the meeting will take place either in Iran or in the UAE; the date has not yet been determined.

In addition, the agency's source claims that Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said of Oman might visit the Islamic Republic soon. No other details of the sultan's possible trip are given.

Interaction between Abu Dhabi and Tehran stepped up at the end of 2021. In early December 2021, Emirati National Security Adviser Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed Al Nahyan visited the Iranian capital and held talks with Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani as well as President Ebrahim Raisi. Last September 14, the UAE sent back the ambassador to Tehran, recalled in 2016.

The UAE's level of diplomatic representation in Iran was reduced following Iranian protesters, outraged by the execution of Shiite cleric Nimr al-Nimr in Saudi Arabia in January 2016, stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran.
