Argentina, Egypt, Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia are poised to become new members of the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa), according to a report by Jamil Chade, the Geneva-based correspondent of the Brazilian portal UOL. The information is said to be based on a draft of the final document from the ongoing BRICS summit.
The choice of these new members reportedly took into consideration geographical factors to ensure regional balance within the association. Additionally, the possibility of admitting another African nation to the bloc is under consideration, aligning with this principle. While Brazil is reportedly interested in Indonesia's inclusion in the future, Jakarta is not yet prepared to join the BRICS group.
The BRICS summit, held in Johannesburg from August 22 to 24, has brought attention to the issue of admitting new members to the association. South African Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Naledi Pandor, previously stated that the leaders of the BRICS countries have reached an agreement outlining the principles for admitting new members. A total of 22 countries have applied to join BRICS, indicating the growing interest in membership.
