Media: Syria and Saudi Arabia resume economic cooperation and trade

13 June 2023

Saudi Arabia and Syria have reached an agreement to resume cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, as well as investment. This was reported by the SANA news agency on Tuesday following talks held in Riyadh between a Syrian delegation led by Chairman of the Federation of Syrian Chambers of Commerce Mohammed Abu al-Huda al-Lahham and Chairman of the Federation of Saudi Chambers Hassan bin Mujib Al-Huwaizi.

The Syrian delegation, SANA reported, noted that Damascus is ready to develop cooperation with other Arab states and praised Riyadh's stance on Syria and its people. It noted the desire of Syrian entrepreneurs to enter the Saudi market and invest in various sectors of the kingdom's economy.

The meeting was held in Riyadh on the margins of the 10th Arab and Chinese Entrepreneurs' Conference.

In early May, the Saudi foreign ministry announced its decision to reopen its embassy in Damascus given the republic has normalized its relations with other Arab countries.

On May 19, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad attended the Arab League summit in Jeddah for the first time since 2010. Shortly before that, the Arab League Council decided to restore Syria's full membership in the regional organization, which had been suspended in November 2011.

After the outbreak of civil war in Syria, most Arab countries, failing to secure concessions from Damascus in favor of the opposition, recalled their ambassadors and joined the economic boycott of the republic. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and several other countries during the conflict provided financial and military aid to the armed formations that opposed the Syrian government. Recently, some countries, including Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates and Oman, have reopened their diplomatic missions in Damascus.
