20 July 2021

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin congratulated Russian Muslims on Kurban Bayram, which is celebrated this year on July 20. The telegram was published on Tuesday on the government website.

"The Russian Muslim community is doing a lot for the development of interfaith dialogue. The great educational activities of authoritative religious leaders, thanks to which centuries-old Islamic traditions, unique culture and education are preserved, universities are opened, architectural monuments are restored and new mosques are built, deserve sincere respect," the Prime Minister said in a telegram sent to heads of religious boards of Muslims in Russia.

Mishustin especially mentioned the efforts of the Ummah aimed at strengthening the institution of the family, education of youth and assertion of the ideals of mutual respect and tolerance in the Russian society.

Kurban Bayram, the Festival of Sacrifice, is celebrated on the tenth day of the 12th month of the Muslim lunar calendar and marks the end of the Hajj, the pilgrimage of Muslims to Mecca. Kurban Bayram traditionally begins with sermons and festive prayers, culminating in the sacrifice of animals. In 2021, the holiday will take place on July 20. Regional religious boards independently decide on the format of the holiday prayers, taking into account the epidemiological situation.
