Russia and Syria highly appreciate the efforts of the sides aimed at providing conditions for the return of Syrian refugees, Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian President's Special Representative for Syria, said following his meeting with President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Wednesday.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Anna Kuznetsova and Mikhail Mizintsev, head of Russian interdepartmental coordination headquarters for the return of refugees to Syria. Members of the Russian delegation arrived in Damascus to participate in a joint meeting of the coordination headquarters for the return of refugees and displaced persons, which was held the day before.

"During the meeting, the sides praised the positive results achieved as a result of active and effective work, as well as the efforts of both sides to ensure proper conditions for the return of refugees to their towns and villages on the territory of Syria," Lavrentiev said.

According to him, Moscow and Damascus also noted the high pace of national reconciliation in Syria and stressed the importance of bilateral relations and memorandums of understanding signed by Russian and SAR coordinating bodies.

"Such events will continue at different levels in order to implement the recommendations and signed agreements, as well as intensify cooperation between the authorities in the Russian and Syrian regions," the special representative said.

He noted that the purpose of the meetings of the coordination headquarters was not only to intensify the process of the return of Syrian refugees, but also to improve the situation in the country, as well as to strengthen ties between the two friendly nations.
