The CIS special services closely monitor the actions of the Taliban (banned in Russia) that came to power in Afghanistan, Sergei Naryshkin, director of the Foreign intelligence service, told reporters on Wednesday.
"We predicted the development of events according to the scenario in which they occurred. As a result, a new power came in - the Taliban movement. We continue to closely monitor the actions of the new government and exchange information with our colleagues from the CIS in a prompt manner," he stressed.
According to Naryshkin, the issue of Afghanistan was discussed today at a meeting of heads of security agencies and intelligence services of the CIS member states. "During all recent years, every intelligence and special service of the CIS countries has been closely following the development of the situation in Afghanistan. We have exchanged intelligence, operational and special information on a daily basis, understanding the threat that comes from the territory of Afghanistan to each of our countries - the terrorist threat, the migration threat, and drug trafficking," Naryshkin said.
He emphasized that these threats have not disappeared, they have intensified. "In general, the situation is serious, and the terrorist threat from the territory of Afghanistan has not disappeared, it has increased. Special services, the military are taking preventive actions to protect against a set of threats," the SVR director stressed.
However, he also noted a positive phenomenon in the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. "There is a positive phenomenon, which is that the Afghan crisis and the fled of the coalition led by the United States from Afghanistan is such a definite feature of a historically short period of the unipolar world. And that's a good thing," Naryshkin said.
