Nebenzya: US Unable to Influence Israel in Lebanon Conflict

21 October

Israel is acting independently in its conflict with Lebanon, and the US appears unable to influence the steps taken by the Israeli government. This was stated by Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, in an interview with TASS.

When discussing the US position regarding the Israeli-Lebanese confrontation, Nebenzya noted that the logic is similar to what is happening in Gaza: "Israel is steadily increasing its military activities without consulting its main strategic ally. It's a case of 'the tail wagging the dog.' This may not be due to a reluctance by the Americans to pressure Israeli leadership, but rather their inability to influence actions taken by West Jerusalem."

Nebenzya emphasized that achieving stability in the Israeli-Lebanese border region is unlikely without first halting hostilities in Gaza. He pointed out that Hezbollah has repeatedly expressed its willingness to end its confrontation with Israel as soon as the violence in Gaza stops. He also mentioned that Hezbollah leaders supported a ceasefire proposal on September 21, but Israel proceeded with its military operation.

On September 23, Israel launched "Operation Northern Arrows" against Hezbollah forces, conducting extensive airstrikes on the organization's military targets in Lebanon. During one such air raid on September 27 in Beirut, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed. The organization confirmed his death and vowed to continue its resistance against Israel. On the night of October 1, the Israeli army announced the start of a ground operation in the border areas of southern Lebanon.
