03 November 2022

Pakistan's former prime minister, Imran Khan, has been shot and wounded in the leg in an attack on the political march in Gujranwala, Geo.tv reports, citing police.

According to its reports, several other members of Khan-led political movement Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Justice) were injured. The suspect has been detained. No information about Khan's condition is given.

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif condemned the incident, the Pakistani government said on its Twitter page. He directed Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah to seek a report on the incident from police and Punjab provincial administration.

The procession of opposition supporters began on October 28 from the administrative center of Punjab province, the city of Lahore. The demonstrators, led by the movement chairman Imran Khan, marched through the streets of Gujranwala on Thursday.

Khan stepped down as head of Pakistan's government in April 2022, when the lower house of parliament passed a vote of no confidence in him and elected Pakistan Muslim League (N) Chairman Sharif as new prime minister. Since May 2022, Khan's party has been campaigning to return to power in the Islamic republic.
